| Wasdale valley is in the Western
Lake District yet near to the West coast of Cumbria giving a huge
variety of activities and events for everyone. The village of Nether
Wasdale (pictured top right) has two Country inns offering
a warm welcome to campers. There are excellent varied menus, real
ale and beer gradens. Children are also catered for. Tea, coffee
and cold drinks are available throughout the day. The hotel at the
top of the village serves evening dinners for those special occasions.
For Walkers and Climbers
There is superb walking and climbing in the immediate area. Wasdale
head (about 6 miles) leads to Great Gable (899m) and Scafell Pike
(977m). There is also Yewbarrow (627m) and Kirk fell (802m) within
the vicinity and walks which can take you over to the Borrowdale
and Langdale fells. Wasdale Head is the birth place of British mountaineering,
making this an excellent base to start your day out.
For Families
Muncaster castle is only 5 miles away. This has a owl centre, mole
maze, tea rooms and beautiful gardens which along with the castle
itself are said to be haunted! The castle is open to the public
and often has exhibitions and displays.
Also nearby is the La'al Ratty, a famous narrow gauge steam railway
giving rides through the picturesque Eskdale valley and onto Ravenglass.
This is an unspoilt seaside village, where you can watch the small
fishing boats and can come and buy fresh fish. Ravenglass is home
to the ruins of an old Roman bath house.
Near to the camp site is Murthwaite Green Trekking
Centre, Silecroft - family rides, fell and beach gallops, novice
to experienced rides catered for and free use of approved riding
hats. Booking essential.
Historic Cumbria
Along with the Ravenglass Roman bath, another Roman site is to be
found at Hard Knott (through Eskdale). Whitehaven is a fine Georgian
coastal town (15 miles) and has magnificent architecture. It boasts
a beautiful quay walks and the Beacon museum and Rum Story both
explain Whitehaven's romantic history.
Drives
Wasdale is surrounded by natural beauty. Ennerdale is close by with
its wild scenery and stunning lake. Head over Cold fell to Cockermouth
where you will find Wordworth's house, the sheep and wool centre
and the castle.
